La meccanica supera la fantasia in questo automa che domina il tempo
La Quête du Temps non è un orologio è un congegno mirabolante che supera il metro di altezza, con una struttura articolata in tre sezioni integrate: la cupola di vetro dipinta con una rappresentazione della volta celeste dell’emisfero settentrionale; l’orologio astronomico con le sue complicazioni distintive e due quadranti: anteriore dcon quattro strati di cristallo di rocca a specchio, e posteriore che raffigura una volta celeste dell’emisfero settentrionale che segue in tempo reale il movimento delle costellazioni, misurando anche il giorno siderale; e la base, un piedistallo a due livelli che raffigura il sistema solare su uno sfondo di lapislazzuli. I pianeti sono cabochon di pietre dure ornamentali, con i nomi indicati da intarsi in madreperla. Sotto, la base ottagonale ospita il meccanismo che aziona il movimento dell’automa e crea la musica che accompagna l’animazione.
L’automa, che indica ore e minuti grazie alle 23 complicazioni del calibro 9270 – composto da 2.370 elementi, è programmato per eseguire tre diverse sequenze, della durata complessiva di un minuto e mezzo. Può essere attivato su richiesta o programmato per funzionare in qualsiasi momento fino a 24 ore prima. Le melodie che lo accompagnano sono state composte appositamente da Woodkid, musicista e direttore artistico con cui Vacheron Constantin collabora ormai da diversi anni.
La Quête du Temps è nato per celebrare il 270° anniversario della Maison confermando che

Questo strumento meccanico, questo automa dalle sembianze di un Astronomo umanista richiama la tradizione delle merveilles, dispositivi complessi che racchiudevano progresso tecnico e scientifico, follie pensate per sorprendere e per la creazione de La Quête du Temps ogni aspetto tecnico ed estetico ha superato i limiti: la Manifattura ha ideato l’automa insieme a François Junod, riconosciuto come uno degli automatier migliori al mondo; ha prodotto il meccanismo dell’orologio e la cassa in collaborazione con L’Épée 1839; gli astronomi dell’Osservatorio di Ginevra hanno contribuito alla narrazione celeste, mentre i maestri artigiani hanno messo a disposizione le loro competenze per la decorazione artistica di questo capolavoro che ha ispirato anche un orologio da polso: il nuovo Métiers d’Art Tributo alla Ricerca del Tempo, in edizione limitata a 20 esemplari, che ha richiesto tre anni di sviluppo.

Mechanics surpasses imagination in this automaton that dominates time
La Quête du Temps is not a watch, but an amazing device over a meter tall, with a structure divided into three integrated sections: a glass dome painted with a representation of the northern hemisphere’s sky; the astronomical clock with its distinctive complications and two dials: the front with four layers of mirrored rock crystal, and the rear depicting the celestial vault of the northern hemisphere, which follows the movement of the constellations in real time, also measuring the sidereal day; and the base, a two-level pedestal depicting the solar system against a lapis lazuli background. The planets are cabochons of ornamental gemstones, with their names indicated by mother-of-pearl inlays. Below, the octagonal base houses the mechanism that drives the automaton’s movement and creates the music that accompanies the animation.
The automaton, which displays hours and minutes thanks to the 23 complications of the caliber 9270—composed of 2,370 components—is programmed to perform three different sequences, lasting a total of one and a half minutes. It can be activated on demand or programmed to operate at any time up to 24 hours in advance. The accompanying melodies were specially composed by Woodkid, a musician and artistic director with whom Vacheron Constantin has been collaborating for several years.

The result of seven years of work, this unprecedented collaborative project has given rise to an extraordinary object: a mécanique d’art that unites humankind and the universe in an unparalleled cultural and artistic expression. This mechanical instrument, this automaton resembling a humanist astronomer, recalls the tradition of merveilles, complex devices that embodied technical and scientific progress, follies designed to surprise. For the creation of La Quête du Temps, every technical and aesthetic aspect pushed the boundaries: the Manufacture designed the automaton together with François Junod, recognized as one of the world’s finest automaton makers; it produced the watch mechanism and case in collaboration with L’Épée 1839; astronomers from the Geneva Observatory contributed to the celestial narrative, while master craftsmen lent their expertise to the artistic decoration of this masterpiece, which also inspired a wristwatch: the new Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest for Time, limited to 20 pieces, which took three years to develop.
