Un viaggio affascinante e senza tempo che accompagna la storia del mondo. Un prezioso volume dedicato al prezioso dono del mare.

Piccole e luminose come il destino che hanno avuto. Ha inizio così la lettura del bel volume riccamente illustrato dedicato a “Tutte le perle del mondo. Storie di scambi e magnifici ornamenti” edito dalla Società editrice il Mulino e scritto da Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli, Luca Molà e Giorgio Riello.

Da sempre le perle hanno ispirato scrittore e artisti, ma hanno anche appassionato i regnanti del mondo e affascinato le donne che ne hanno bramato la loro esclusività. Nel libro si racconta di esempi eccellenti come la perla scaramazza offerta in regalo dall’elettore palatino Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz- Neuburg (1658-1716) alla moglie Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici o del fastoso corredo di Lucrezia Borgia che al suo arrivo a Ferrara per sposare Alfonso d’Este che ne contava migliaia di perle come quelle “bellissime e a goccia di dimensioni importanti” di cui se ne contato 386.

Ma le perle sono state anche testimoni di viaggi interminabili. Dall’antica Via della Seta sulla scia di Marco Polo che racconta nel Milione con minuzia di particolari la loro pesca nello stretto di Ceylon nella provincia del Malabar dove tra aprile e maggio “molte navi grandi e piccole trasportano uomini salariati che sanno andare nel fondo a pigliar le ostriche, nelle quali sono attaccate le perle … E pingliansi in grandissima quantità, delle quali si fornisce quasi tutt’il mondo, per essere la maggior parte di quelle che si pigliano in questo colfo tonde e lustri”.

Il libro è uno spaccato interessantissimo per tutto il valore che questi gioielli del mare si portano dietro, simboli, valori, esperienze, che hanno arricchito gli scambi commerciali da tempi remoti ed hanno contribuito a scrivere le storie di corti e imperi, sempre nel libro si segnalano le quantità innumerevoli importate dai Paesi come la Spagna, dove, solo a Siviglia nel 1587 i chili di perle scaricati al porto furono 3.330.

Pearls have always inspired writers and artists, but they have also enthralled the rulers of the world and fascinated women who have coveted their exclusivity. The book recounts excellent examples such as the scarama pearl offered as a gift by the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz- Neuburg (1658-1716) to his wife Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici or the sumptuous trousseau of Lucrezia Borgia, who upon her arrival in Ferrara to marry Alfonso d’Este counted thousands of pearls such as the “beautiful and drop-shaped ones of important size” of which 386 were counted.

But pearls also witnessed endless journeys. From the ancient Silk Road in the wake of Marco Polo, who recounts in The Million with meticulous detail their fishing in the Strait of Ceylon in the province of Malabar where between April and May “many large and small ships transport salaried men who know how to go to the bottom to catch oysters, in which the pearls are attached … And pingliansi in great quantities, of which almost the whole world is supplied, for being most of those that are caught in this colf round and lustrous.”

The book is a most interesting insight into all the value that these jewels of the sea carry, symbols, values, and experiences, which have enriched trade since ancient times and helped write the histories of courts and empires.Also in the book are the countless quantities imported from countries such as Spain, where, in Seville alone in 1587 the kilos of pearls unloaded at the port were 3,330.
