Un volume iconico celebra gli orologi del lusso: in libreria arriva “Master Rolex”
Sugli scaffali delle librerie, in edizione limitata, troverà posto anche un volume iconico dedicato alla storia del Rolex. Si chiama “Master Rolex” ed è un viaggio senza tempo, un tributo in edizione limitata (mille copie) all’orologio diventato oggetto di status sociale. Nel volume compaiono gli orologi che hanno fatto tendenza e che l’uomo ha indossato durante grandi imprese.
Il libro è stato scritto da Guido Mondani, tra i massimi esperti Rolex, e dalla figlia Giorgia, imprenditrice digitale, esperta del settore orologi e del segmento luxury. “Master Rolex è un libro tributo che rappresenta un’occasione per ricostruire e celebrare gli orologi che hanno fatto la storia, svelando curiosità sia tecniche che intriganti. Una pubblicazione in limited edition perfetta come prezioso regalo di Natale, in grado di sorprendere anche le persone più esigenti”, spiega Giorgia Mondani.
Ogni pagina è il racconto dell’evoluzione del marchio, ma soprattutto introduce il lettore in altre piccole, grandi storie e retroscena. Contiene ad esempio le storie leggendarie del Rolex Bao Dai, referenza 6062 con calendario lunare. È stato venduto dalla casa d’aste svizzera Phillips & Bacs a 5,066,00 milioni di franchi svizzeri e rappresenta, alla stregua del modello 8171, il Rolex più complicato mai realizzato. Apparteneva all’imperatore vietnamita Bào Dai, collezionista a tutto tondo, uomo di grande gusto, più avvezzo alle frequentazioni del jet-set internazionale che alla politica. Lo acquistò dalla maison nel 1954, in occasione della partecipazione alla conferenza di pace per l’Indocina.
Nel libro, le “lancette” si fermano anche sul Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman ref 6239”. Paul Newman lo indossava sempre: sul set, quando nuotava, per cronometrare le sue corse in auto. Battuto all’ asta da Phillips per 17.8 milioni di dollari, è probabilmente l’orologio più iconico di sempre. Infine il leggendario ROLEX GMT-MASTER, battuto a 1.952.000 dollari. Lo indossò Marlon Brando in “Apocalypse Now”, nel 1979. L’orologio ha acquisito ulteriore valore per due dettagli. Innanzitutto è sprovvisto della ghiera girevole prevista per questo modello. Un membro della produzione, infatti, suggerì all’attore di eliminarla per rendere più credibile il personaggio che avrebbe dovuto interpretare, un colonnello dell’esercito sperduto nella giungla. Il modello acquisì valore anche grazie all’incisione “M. Brando” fatta dall’attore con una penna elettrica.
An iconic volume celebrates luxury watches: ‘Master Rolex’ arrives in bookshops
On the shelves of bookshops, in a limited edition, there will also be an iconic volume dedicated to the history of Rolex. It is called “Master Rolex” and is a timeless journey, a limited edition tribute (one thousand copies) to the watch that has become an object of social status. The book features the watches that have set trends and that men have worn during great feats.
The book was written by Guido Mondani, a leading Rolex expert, and his daughter Giorgia, a digital entrepreneur and expert in the watch and luxury segment. “Master Rolex is a tribute book that provides an opportunity to reconstruct and celebrate the watches that have made history, revealing both technical and intriguing curiosities. A limited edition publication perfect as a precious Christmas gift, able to surprise even the most demanding people,” explains Giorgia Mondani.
Each page is the story of the brand’s evolution, but above all it introduces the reader to other small, big stories and backstories. For example, it contains the legendary stories of the Rolex Bao Dai, Reference 6062 with lunar calendar. It was sold by the Swiss auction house Phillips & Bacs for 5,066.00 million Swiss francs and is, like the 8171 model, the most complicated Rolex ever made. It belonged to the Vietnamese emperor Bào Dai, an all-round collector, a man of great taste, more accustomed to frequenting the international jet-set than politics. He bought it from the Maison in 1954, on the occasion of his participation in the Indochina peace conference.
In the book, the ‘hands’ also stop on the Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman ref 6239’. Paul Newman wore it all the time: on the set, when swimming, to time his car rides. Sold at auction by Phillips for $17.8 million, it is probably the most iconic watch ever. Finally, the legendary ROLEX GMT-MASTER, fetched $1,952,000. Marlon Brando wore it in “Apocalypse Now” in 1979. The watch acquired additional value due to two details. Firstly, it lacks the rotating bezel intended for this model. A member of the production team suggested to the actor that it be removed in order to make the character he was to play, an army colonel lost in the jungle, more believable. The model also gained in value thanks to the engraving ‘M. Brando’ made by the actor with an electric pen.
